This was a brand-new house — white ceilings, white walls, glossy tile underfoot, and a ceiling full of recessed lights. Bright, open, and almost too clean. It looked finished. It did not yet feel like a home.
The assignment was simple and specific: turn the living room and dining room into warm family spaces without painting a single wall and without changing the tile.
We started with texture instead of color. Natural jute underfoot to take the shine off the floor. Oak in the tables and consoles for grain and weight. Rattan woven chairs for a light, handmade warmth. Then a little green — a pair of green abstract paintings and a few textiles — so the rooms would not stay frozen in that new-construction white.
The recessed lights stayed. The walls stayed white. The tile stayed glossy. What changed was the feeling: rooms that used to look like a showroom now look like a family lives there.
